The Future of AR and VR in Education: Potentials, Risks and Recommendations

I want to engage with school managements and teachers who intend to use (or have already used) AR and VR in regular teaching process as well as students and their parents involved. I know that most of my audience have an optimistic attitude toward technological innovations in education, which is the same as me. However, since AR and VR haven’t gain popularity in China, I don’t have an experience of using these two technologies but I have done some researches in this field, which can help me identify some issues of these two technologies as well as providing some possible solutions.

Taking into consideration the fact that combining technology with education will bring profound influence to the ENTIRE WORLD, I will use English in my booklet. Because of the complexity of technology, I will not cover the technological details in this multimodel text. Instead, I created a booklet, serving as the complement of the instructions for AR and VR products.In order to appeal to ethos and pathos, I will incorporate wonderful pictures as well as ideas from specialists in this field within my booklet. A logical structure can also help me appeal to logos. I hope this booklet can give users a glimpse of the enchanting features of AR and VR technology while at the same time, raise their awareness of the limitations such as cyber sickness after over exposure to these technologies, online harassment, data security and so on. I also hope my recommendations at the end can be helpful.

In the first few pages, I will show some of the most impressive potentials AR and VR have in teaching and learning to the audience through pictures. Through these pictures, I can connect students by providing the ways students can use AR and VR in learning as well as the promising learning outcomes after using AR and VR. School teachers can also be involved in my text by  finding an alternative way to teach medical students who are afraid of operating on a death body or students who have to do experiments full of danger. They can also develop new ideas from my text if they don’t know how to incorporate AR and VR in teaching.

After having an overview of these potentials, I will take a turn and move into the limitations of AR and VR. I did this in an “abrupt” way because I want to grab readers’ attention from being absorbed in the great potentials of AR and VR, to focusing on the existing issues AR and VR have in education. These limitations need to be fully aware of by school teachers, students, school management and even the developers of AR/VR products. And following these limitations, I will offer some solutions and recommendations to these disadvantages of AR and VR such as setting time limits. I hope students, teachers and school managements can find it helpful in dealing with limitations of AR and VR.

Besides making it as a booklet, I think my text is also suitable to be published on the website, serving as a substantive source because all the potentials, limitations and recommendations I made are source-based. Compared with other texts, my text can be more intuitive because it contains many fascinating pictures. Moreover, I think my text can also be posted on some social media where people can share their thought on deploying AR and VR in education, which can get more people know about these two emerging technology in educational settings.

However, there are also limitations in my text. I did not provide enough background of AR and VR as well as a detailed statement for each potential and limitation. Therefore, it may be hard for readers who don’t have enough digital literacy to understand. Also, people who don’t understand English or don’t use electronic devices are not my targeted audience, which is also one of the limitations of my text.

I hope my text can make a little difference to the schools who intend to use or have already used AR and VR in teaching and learning!
