The audience I want to engage with are non-specialists in the field of Chinese history, such as engineers or even science students. As far as I am concerned, the audience I want to access might not be familiar with my topic – the prevalence of the “Zeng Guofan phenomenon”[1]. They might know little about the Chinese history and Zeng Guofan, which makes it difficult for them to read through a scholarly article with 8 pages long talking about a specific phenomenon greatly related to the Chinese history and a Chinese man. Therefore, it is necessary for me to provide a “text” that can be easily understood by them. This “text” will help introduce the background of my research and briefly show my findings.
The “text” I created is a poster. The language I used in the poster is mainly English, but since my topic has its base on Chinese history, I also provided translation to Chinese for some terms I used in order to help Chinese readers comprehend. In this poster, I first offered two pictures that I found on the Internet and edited by myself, which depict people’s almost opposite evaluations on Zeng before and after the mid-1980s. Seeing this sharp comparison, readers will naturally start to think why people reevaluated Zeng, which is what I focus on in my EADA essay. After showing the comparison of people’s evaluations on Zeng, I posted another pair of two pictures to demonstrate the prevailing explanations on the “Zeng Guofan phenomenon” and how I accounted for this phenomenon.
The potential venue for my poster can be a website page, a library, or a classroom in high school. I will simply post the poster at these places, which are appropriate because the passers-by are probably the audience I would like to reach. The affordance of the poster lies in its straightaway way to express. When people see the poster, they will quickly capture the background of my research and what my claim is through the two pairs of pictures in the poster. However, using the form of a poster also has limitations. To illustrate, I cannot include more details of my research into it. Otherwise, the poster may look disorganized and tediously long, making people unwilling to read it.
