The multimodal text I designed is a small brochure of A5 size. It claims that medical workers in China should have more direct ways of communicating with the public on the condition that they are still under the regulation of government officials. Different from my EADA which aims at raising the awareness of government officials, my targeted audience for this multimodal text are mainly the youths of the general public (particularly in Guangzhou, where the brochures will be distributed). I choose this group because ever since COVID-19 broke out, I have seen many peers (including me) claiming on social media like Moments or Weibo for total autonomy given to medical workers. But after my research throughout the semester, I have found that this is impossible to achieve overnight in a centralized country like China; rather, we should make improvements step by step. My purpose is to share the idea with my peers that before we express our views towards social events, we should always be realistic of the current situation of the country we base on. To reach out for my targeted audience, I plan to make use of the newspaper lending desk in subway stations in Guangzhou considering that most young people take the subway as the major means of transportation. I will place my brochures there for people to take and read during their waiting time for the next train to arrive, when they are most likely to search for ways to relieve their boredom. Of course, not only the youth take the subway, so my unintended audience can be any passers-by who do not belong to this group and though I am probably unfamiliar with them, I will feel greatly honored to share my ideas and engage with them.
At the start of my design, I feel it necessary to have my brochure cover designed in a modern and appealing style so that they ‘pop out’ among various magazines in the newspaper desk and when people first see it, they will be attracted to take it. I designed a logo with the slogan “take your time, step by step”, which not only corresponds to my claim that improvements in medical workers’ freedom of expressions cannot be made overnight, but is also popular among Chinese youths and thus easy to draw attentions from them; I also put my central idea on the cover by emphasizing the antonym pair ‘DIRECTLY’ and ‘INDIRECTLY’ through font sizes in the anticipation that this might arouse curiosity of my targeted audience.
Considering the limitation that my targeted audience have a very short time to browse it, I applied minimalism principle in my inner page design so that they do not feel it a burden to read through. In each page, I only have up to three sentences to present relevant facts and it was not until the back cover that I clearly stated my claim-indeed, I should have done this at the front, but I feel it more efficient and valuable to guide my targeted audience “step by step” to develop their own ideas. I expect the time they spent on my brochure to be a process of actively thinking and understanding rather than passively accepting my ideas because the latter is very likely to be forgotten as soon as they get on the crowded train. I have also included where the facts that are not so widely known originate(for example, Zhao Fei’s words) for my audience to further explore along with my Wechat and the link to my EADA text at the back cover of my brochure so that my audience can contact with me do discuss deeper if they have interest. Besides, due to the limitations resulting from the sensitive relationship between my claim and politics, I decide not to include any Chinese character inside my brochure at the start; instead, I used the simplest English expressions and since Guangzhou implements a rather high level of English education, I believe most of my targeted audience have little problem in understanding. Still, it is subjective to changes-if this truly blocked many people who wish to read it, I will add a Chinese version that conveys similar ideas but using different sets of expressions or evidence.
Finally, though what I put forward this time is a brochure, I can see the potential of applying my design elements to other products like T-shirts, phone wall papers or mobile phone shells. If later some time, I come up with ways how these products can be distributed, I will be more than willing to put them into practice as well.
