    This text aims at the general public and its purpose is to give a brief view or thinking on the topic consumerism and advertising.

    It is an advertisement. It sells a nearly blank white shirt and the only words is “refuse consumerism”. The form, advertisement and the word, “refuse consumerism” consist of the two objects discussed in the EAD, advertising and consumerism. I choose white as the color of the T-shirt and I leave a lot of blank on the T-shirt because white and blank are usually seemed as the symbols that reflects no manipulation.

    It seems like a normal advertisement, but let’s think a little more about it: it is strange to promote an idea of refusing consumerism in an advertisement. What I want to express lies on this strange place.

    In my essay, I have mentioned that one of the most important features of consumerism is symbolization. The symbols give consumers a sense of honor and encourage consumers to buy the commodities. In this advertisement, we can also find consumerism in it because it also symbolizes something. The symbols are white and blank and they are encoded as honor to the people who don’t want to be manipulated by consumerism.

    This phenomenon is due to advertising. One important view in my essay is that advertising can manipulate our culture and other issues to promotes consumerism. In my advertisement, the manipulation is not obvious because the advertisement is too simple, but in fact, advertisers will use a lot of forms of advertisements for manipulation, and the consequence is that advertisements define the symbol “refuse consumerism” and use this symbol to promote their products like T-shirt, and we are surprise that “refuse consumerism” even help increasing consumerism. I hope the surprise can help audience think more about it.
