Do the right thing!Distinguish between Abusive Censorship and Regulated Censorship

RG F – Expression in the internet age

Author’s Note:

In creating this multimodal text, I aim to engage with ordinary people living in democratic countries. My aim is to convey to ordinary people that what really matters is not whether censorship should exist or not, but rather how censorship is implemented, is it regulated or abused. The reason is that, in today’s common debates on censorship, two sides in the debate often hold opposing points of views. Politicians guard themselves by recognizing censorship as “regulated censorship” that protects people, while ordinary people, in most cases, recognize censorship as “abusive censorship”. That disparity in views doesn’t help solving the problem but create antagonism. In my EADA essay, I have already conveyed the idea to the politicians and here I want the ordinary people to also take a step back, to think, if the abuse of censorship, or censorship itself, is what people really hate. And I believe in getting both sides to reflect on this problem, we will soon create less antagonism but more respect and understanding, and work together to build a better way of censorship that really fits our society.

So, as I just mentioned, my audience are just ordinary people like me, and they typically protest the implementation of censorship. Since so many people today are so used to superficial contents on the internet, I may not try to involve many theoretical things. Instead, I adopted common events like COVID-19 as examples to help clarify and justify my ideas as well as engaging(connecting) my audience. And unlike my EADA essay, I put the blame for abusive censorship before the benefits of regulated censorship to show respect for my audiences because they typically think censorship is bad. To vivify the content, I also made a comparison between two pictures (for the first one I want to reveal the ironic results of abusive censorship and the second one tells us how censorship can help us) to help my audience capture my ideas. In addition, I used mainly two colors, the black color represents abusive censorship and the white color represents regulated censorship. The word censorship is covered in both black and white to indicate its duality. Finally, I think the comparison of colors will appeal to my audiences.

The genre will be posters (I know there are three pages). And the first page can be put up as an independent poster. The following pages can be attached or not because they are specific clarifications for the first page. And I have incorporated words and pictures.

I believe there will be plenty of ways to distribute my text. Sending as a Twitter, publishing as a brochure, being embedded in magazines, published as advertisements will all be good ways. And among them, I prefer advertisements. Specifically, the advertisements will be published through google to YouTube and other blog sites. I want people to see my post when they are searching for videos/articles about views or introductions to censorship, because in this way my text will first touch those who care about the issue of censorship (and possibly influence their views towards censorship). In addition, embedded as advertisements in the contents related to censorship is a good way to interact with other contents in the venue.

My choice creates following limitations: 1. Advertising expense; 2. The risk of being censored by the platform or the users’ browser with the function of blocking advertisements; 3. I fear that an advertisement has less ability to intrigue thinking than brochures and magazines, and it cannot be stored by the user for potential future thinking. And it creates following affordances: 1. The first page is intuitive (needs future working. I know the first page might be a little confusing at this stage) enough as a poster to attract people and tell them the rough ideas, while the further two posters serve as further explanations to deeper engage them. 2. The distribution can be effective because it touches the most related people (the people caring about censorship) first.

PS: As for the “unintended trajectories/audiences”, I think it can be TV news, live discussions on TV or on online forums (if my text should successfully inspire people’s reflections on censorship and become a focus of the discussion around censorship😊😂)

  1. Hi! I know this is sort of off-topic however I had to ask.
Does operating a well-established website like yours require
a massive amount work? I am completely new to writing a blog but I do write in my journal everyday.
I’d like to start a blog so I will be able to share my own experience and feelings online.
Please let me know if you have any recommendations or tips for new aspiring blog owners.
    Appreciate it!

    1. hi there, thanks for the reply. I am the admin of this website. There is two ways for you to set up your personal website.
The first one requires no computer knowledge at all, which is to use Notion. Notion is a free personal management app. You can create pages in a nicely formatted way. And there is many templates you can use. After creating the page you can just share your page with a open link.

The second one will involve a bit of trouble since you would have to deal with servers but this option gives you more freedom over your website. It is advisable for someone who do not have computer science background to use WordPress to set up their personal blog. The WordPress system gives you a nicely-designed GUI interface. Many widgets are offered and you can just drag-and-put them to design your web page. To deploy WordPress and let your web page be open to internet, you will need two things: a server with a public IP (you can easily buy one from AMS, AZURE or GCP) and a domain name. Follow instructions on WordPress official page to have it installed on your server and configure everything else.
