Author’s Thinking Rhetorically Note

I want to introduce my topic to those non-academic audience in a form of comic. Here are some reasons why I would like to choose it. My topic is about automation bias, and this is an unfamiliar concept for audiences in the wider world besides the academic field. For a new concept, it is more easy to introduce it by using examples than explaining it with words, so I decide to use some daily examples to show how automation bias is and how it occurred in our daily lives.

Besides, I can use the exaggeration in the comic to show the emergency of my topic. In this way, a comic can better make audience realize the importance of preparing for automation bias. Compared with text, a picture can contain more information. For example, some details like the expression of characters can tell the audience what the character is thinking or feeling, and the background of the picture can also give audience a direct impression of the surrounding. These things may require a lot of words to describe or even hard to express them in words.

In addition, people’s attention is easier to be attracted by pictures than texts. When looking at something, people will tend to notice picture first: how it looks like, what color is it and then start to notice other detailed information on it like texts. What’s more, people are easier to get board when facing long paragraph of text, especially when reading articles about what we are not familiar with. But for comic, the situation is different. It is obviously that reading comic is more interesting than reding an article filled with words, so I use the comic to show my topic to non-academic audiences.

The comic is not only pictures, it also has some short sentences like dialogs, onomatopoeic words and other notes. These short sentences can not only make the comic more vivid, but also help audience has a better understanding of it.
